Emerging in the mid-nineteen-nineties, Polish artist Piotr Uklanski’s provocative and varied output has included installation, large-scale paper reliefs, tie-dye paintings, textile based immersive sculptures, resin-based sculptures and paintings, photography, performance, and a feature-length film, Summer Love. His “ink” paintings, began in 2007, are made of numerous drops of ink that accumulate into a variety of compositions. The sheer number of drops is evidence of Uklanski’s intensely laborious process, and the works possess a surprising formal punch. The drop itself calls to mind images and ideas connected to violence, the passage of time, and recent art history. Solo exhibitions of Uklanski’s work have been organized by numerous institutions, such as MoMA, New York; Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Zurich; Kunsthalle Basel; Whitney Museum, New York; and Zaçheta National Gallery, Warsaw. His work has also been included in major group exhibitions such as Manifesta 2, Venice Bienniale, São Paulo Bienal, Venice Film Festival, Berlin Biennale, and the Whitney Biennial. Uklanski’s “ink” paintings are currently the subject of an exhibition at the Dallas Contemporary. In spring 2015, Uklanski will be the subject of a solo exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
