Nate Lowman’s recent shaped canvases have an uncanny presence. Are they neo-Minimal abstract shapes, cut-outs from other works, or decorative floral forms? Their sources are, in fact, very specific and utterly recognizable. In Splatter Apple Leaf, Lowman has abstracted the leaf from the iconic Apple logo and used it as the surface for a seemingly haphazard residue of ink, paint, and dirt. By combining elements of Pop, Abstract Expressionism, and graphic design, Lowman’s creates his own distinct mash-up of visual vocabularies. Lowman has participated in exhibitions at Palais de Tokyo, Paris; Guggenheim Museum, New York; Whitney Museum, New York; New Museum, New York; Punta della Dogana / Palazzo Grassi, Venice; and MACRO Future, Rome, among others. In 2009 the Astrup Fearnley Museum in Oslo mounted Lowman’s first comprehensive solo exhibition, The Natriot Act.
