In 2011, New York-based artist Rob Fischer was an artist in residence at The Chinati Foundation in Marfa. While there, he created a building – resembling a small house or shed – made of repurposed steel and colored glass. The structure was mobile, and the artist moved, reinstalled, suspended, and took apart the structure in a variety of ways. In this photo, we see the painted panels from the house propped up at sunset, capturing the beautiful light quality of the landscape. The leaning panels possess the heroic, yet nostalgic, quality of a structure in ruins, the debris of a bygone era left behind by progress. Fischer has had exhibitions of his work at Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Whitney Museum of American Art at Altria, New York; Contemporary Arts Forum, Santa Barbara; Franklin Art Works, Minneapolis; Max Wigram Gallery, London; and Art in General, New York. His work has also been featured in group exhibitions, including the 2004 Whitney Biennial; Greater New York, P.S.1, Long Island City; Open House: Working in Brooklyn, Brooklyn Museum of Art; and Art and Idea, Mexico City. His work is in the collections of Corcoran Museum, Washington D.C.; Whitney Museum, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; and LACMA, Los Angeles.
