A desire to explore and expose notions of craft and material drives the recent work of Katy Cowan. In Chain, Cowan’s interest in an economy of everyday materials and processes is evidenced by her use of the sheet, chain, and sun (as participant in the act of painting). The artist leaves the lower portion of the canvas undone, an indicator of the artist wrapping the cloth over the stretcher bars, which she compares to the mundane act of making a bed. In 2014, Cowan received her MFA from Otis College of Art and Design, Los Angeles, and recent solo and two-person exhibitions include Elephant Art Space, Los Angeles; Green Gallery, Milwaukee; and LTD, Los Angeles. Her work has also been included in group exhibitions at The Torrance Art Museum and Los Angeles Nomadic Division. Cowan lives and works in Los Angeles.
