Yuki Kimura’s work dislocates our understanding of space and time. In her photographs and installations, photographs are often combined with real objects to set up a complex narrative between the artificial and the real. In About the Table, the same photograph is repeated three times, each with a piece of wood that extends a different part of the photographed table into the viewer’s space. While the photograph documents the table from a single vantage point, Kimura’s sculptural elements ask us to consider the real dimensions, materials, and even present condition of the object, rendering the reality of the photograph completely unstable. Kimura’s work has been in numerous group shows, including 30th São Paulo Biennial; Mount Fuji does not exist, Le Plateau / Frac Ile-de-France, Paris; Kaza Ana / Air Hole: Another Form of Conceptualism from Asia, The National Museum of Art, Osaka; MOT Collection: Plastic Memories – to illuminate now, Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo; Roppongi Crossing: New Visions in Contemporary Japanese Art 2004, Mori Art Museum, Tokyo; and 6th International Istanbul Biennial.
