Iranian-born artist Hadi Tabatabai creates works that possess a serene and quiet beauty, as is seen here in Weave #8. The rigidity of the white grid is softened by Tabatabai’s technique of incising the line on the paper, then using a pencil to create the pale indigo square around it. In effect, the texture and softness of the paper create the lines, rather than the artist making the mark directly with an implement of solid pigment. Tabatabai’s work has been shown in England, Italy, and widely in the United States. He has had solo exhibitions at the Anthony Grant Gallery, New York; Brian Gross Fine Art and Stephen Wirtz Gallery, both in San Francisco; and Inde/Jacobs, Marfa.
