HELLHOUND ON MY TRAIL (ROBERT JOHNSON, DALLAS 6/20/37)

flashe and neon on linen

Mary Weatherford’s paintings repeatedly explore landscapes, specifically to California and New York. In Hellhound on My Trail (Robert Johnson, Dallas 6/20/37), Weatherford uses Dallas, the location where Robert Johnson recorded what has been considered to be one of his most significant blues performances, as a culturally significant catalyst from which to create a large-scale painting that is poetic, nuanced, and poignant luminos. Here, the delicate washes of flashe paint embody a lightness that is wonderfully complimented by the salient glow of the neon lights. Mary Weatherford lives and works in Los Angeles. Her work is included in the public collections at Museum of Modern Art, New York; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; The Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; The Brooklyn Museum; Mead Art Museum, Amherst; Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego; and Orange County Museum of Art, Newport Beach.
