German artist Ulrich Wulff’s paintings dance around nonchalantly between the realms of representation and abstraction. Playful, off-kilter, and uninhibited, Wulff’s colors, lines, and compositions go so far against tradition and convention that they seem almost innocent. A cartoonish shape defined by thick brushstrokes and a thin line appear in the monochromatic Hat, though the head-like form is so loosely painted it appears more as a gestural abstraction. Wulff’s work has appeared in exhibitions at venues such as Art Cologne; Kunstverein Heppenheim; Kunstraum Innsbruck; Heidelberger Kunstverein; and Kunsthalle Kempten.
