Bret Slater’s small, acrylic paintings possess an amazing amount of presence. Abstract and analytical, yet vulnerable and human, they have a quiet, punchy energy that cannot be ignored. Slater layers his medium on thick, and the effect is as much relief sculpture as it is painting. In Solve/Coagula, the cool white paint juxtaposes beautifully with the goofy, handmade nature of the soft edges and slightly off-kilter geometry. Bret Slater’s first solo gallery exhibition in Chicago received rave reviews and was chosen by Modern Painters magazine as one of “100 Artists to Watch” and one of the “Top 100 Best Shows of the Fall 2011”. Slater has exhibited nationally in New Mexico, New York, Chicago, and Dallas. Slater lives and works in Dallas.
