Through a careful calibration of color and line, Jay Shinn investigates the tension between 2D and 3D space. His works are optically stunning, drawing the viewer in with their visual beauty, while simultaneously forcing them to question vision as a means for perceiving the world around us. In Sentinel 4, a subtle gradation of blue produces a protruding effect, while a series of brightly colored lines articulate the simple geometric form. From a distance, these lines appear as engraved marks with a shadow effect, but upon closer inspection their loose application vibrates with a human touch. Shinn lives and works between Dallas, New York, and Berlin, and his works are held in a number of private and public collections, among them Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Rice University Collection, Houston; Till Richter Museum, Buggenhagen; Kansas City Chiefs, Arrowhead Stadium; DFW Airport, Corporate Aviation Terminal, Dallas; and The State Department, Washington, DC, among others.
