Two figures huddle under a table as a dog investigates the scene. This is the mysterious moment in Timothy Lai’s We’ll See this Through (Under the Table) which, like many of Lai’s works, conveys an ambiguous, highly charged psychological moment that exists as a sort of pause among the action of everyday life. Lai’s reduced color palette and raw painting style emphasize the fraught posture of the two figures and the dog which peers in from the outside world, while letting the emotional intensity of the moment shine through. Lai was born in Kota Bharu, Malaysia, and lives and works in Providence, Rhode Island. His work has been featured in group presentations at Jack Barrett, Essex Flowers, Bass & Reiner Gallery, Good Naked Gallery, and Field Projects.
