Italian painter Paolo Serra has spent decades creating works of art using rich color with a careful attention to surface. As a child, Serra was enamored with the paintings he experienced in museums. From 14^th and 15^th century Italian Renaissance to Modernist painters like Malevich, Picasso, and Mondrian, Serra’s knowledge of painting’s history lives in the artist’s more recent work. Untitled is a squared pool of burnt umber made to reverberate by an amber frame surrounded by an off-white border that glows from light bouncing off the gold leaf underneath. Far reaching in its pictorial space and historical reference, Serra skillfully uses surface, the illusion of depth, and layering in this subtle work. Serra’s work is owned by numerous private and public collections.
