German artist Karin Seufert’s most recent body of work is concerned with the void: PVC dots, silver and thread become the materials through which she seeks to evoke the state or space of emptiness. To make Yellow Ring, Seufert carves a shape from styrofoam and then carefully covers it with a ‘skin’ of colored PVC dots stitched together with thread. The styrofoam core is removed, and the textured surface of dots becomes a boundary between inside and outside, physically tracing the void at the heart of the ring. As Seufert suggests, ‘It is the skin of the space, the boundary, which makes the emptiness visible and carefully clasps it. The voids are located inside these skins, partially turned outward, partially hidden on the inside.’ Karin Seufert studied jewelry at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, graduating in 1995. Her work is featured in private and public collections in Europe, Japan and the United States, including the Alice and Louis Koch collection at the Swiss National Museum in Zurich, the Museum of contemporary Art Het Kruithuis in s´Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands, and the Racine Art Museum in Racine, Wisconsin.
