Walter Price

BERRIES IN THE GROVE 1

2018
wax, crayon, acrylic, and graphite on paper
25 1/2 x 19 1/2 inches

The colorful and energetic tableaux of Walter Price illustrate imagined narratives and the artist’s memories — his subconscious mind translated to the canvas or paper. A disciplined artist, which he credits to his time in the Navy, Price wakes up before dawn every morning and works out before letting the imagery from his mind flow directly onto paper. This drawing has several hallmarks of Price’s other work: the setting seems both indoors and outdoors, as if the interior room is a stage; the domestic objects are only partially recognizable; and the black whorls of acrylic paint stand in for black bodies with expressive features formed through only a few marks. Price was born in Macun, Georgia, and served in the US Navy to attend art school through the GI Bill. He has had recent exhibitions at MoMA PS1, New York; Kölnischer Kunstverein, Cologne; and The Modern Institute, Glasgow.
