Though my images are representational and play with narrativity, I generally hesitate to say what they’re about for fear of killing them. Viewers’ associations are always more interesting than my own. – Mark Van Yetter
Most of Mark Van Yetter’s drawings and paintings are modestly-scaled and possess a quiet, dream-like quality. In this untitled work from 2011, the barest outline hints at an elaborate room with ornamented columns, suggesting an aristocratic European setting. A figure appears in a dark doorway, setting up a carefully composed, yet deliberately ambiguous, scene for the viewer to investigate. Yetter’s work has been in solo and group exhibitions at venues throughout the US and Europe.
