Navigating a world that is both real and simulated has become one of the defining characteristics of modern life. New York-based Quinn Tivey explores this notion in the realm of photography and image production, seen here in Mountain Range 2 where visual cues seem to collide. The marble veneer, an image of a geological material, is crumpled into a topographical form, perhaps meant to resemble the rocky surface that would be its source. The blue and green areas become, in essence, a painting of hills and valleys layered onto actual creases and folds, adding another perplexing layer to a work packed with actual and virtual references to the landscape. Tivey’s photo-based practice also extends into sculpture and installation, and his work has been exhibited throughout the US.
