It is difficult to resist the appeal of Yui Yaegashi’s pared-down paintings. The diminutive scale of each piece draws the viewer in to appreciate the texture of each brushstroke and the delicate edges of the paint. She usually works with only a few colors per canvas, layering the limited palette to add visual interest in the intersections. Here, a muted green rests above gray and cream, with the lines in each brushstroke giving the work a subtle movement. Yaegashi lives and works in Tokyo, and her work has been shown in Japan, as well as Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, and London.
