The bright color palette and wonky, hand-drawn geometric shapes seen in Fascinator for Precocious Patrice have become the trademark visual language of Nathan Carter. Thick, drippy brushstrokes cover the metal shapes, giving them the playful immediacy of something that exists because the creator just couldn’t help themselves. And though the piece exudes a naïve, childlike quality, its carefully-calibrated scale and sophisticated composition are evidence of an artist who has honed his vocabulary for many years. Carter’s work has been included in numerous group and solo exhibitions at venues worldwide, including the Nasher Sculpture Center, Dallas; Kemper Museum of Contemporary, Kansas City; ArtPace, San Antonio; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; and Art Gallery of Ontario.
