Goethals achieves a complexity in her encaustic paintings through layering wax and resin with natural pigments. By scraping and buffing the surface, color seems to emerge from somewhere deep within the work. Growing up in Brussels, Goethals took inspiration from Belgian artists of the Northern Renaissance like Jan Van Eyck and Rogier Van Der Weyden, and began painting at an early age. Once she moved to the US, her appreciation for the quality of light in the Southwest led her to New Mexico, where she currently lives and works.
