The FDA approves the anti-HIV drug maraviroc, the first in a class of drugs called CCR5 antagonists. Development of the drug was made possible by amfAR grantee Dr. Nathaniel Landau’s 1996 discovery that HIV typically requires the protein CCR5 to enter cells.

TWO x TWO funds are used to support the DMA-commissioned sculpture Pas de Deux (Plaza Monument) 2016 (2016) by British artist Rebecca Warren. This site-specific work serves as the first in a series of rotating works by various artists highlighted in the new Eagle Family Plaza.

Using TWO x TWO funds, the DMA acquires Yayoi Kusama’s All the Eternal Love I Have for the Pumpkins (2016), one of the artist’s signature Infinity Mirror Rooms. The installation is the only Infinity Mirror Room of its kind in a North American collection.

In a novel approach to conquering HIV, amfAR awards six grants that pair HIV researchers with bioengineers to tackle the persistent reservoirs of virus not cleared by antiretroviral therapy. The grantees will use highly advanced technologies originally developed in other research fields to clear HIV reservoirs.

In April 2020, amfAR temporarily expanded its efforts to include research on the coronavirus, establishing the amfAR Fund to Fight COVID-19. amfAR was also among the first to publish studies, widely reported in the media, showing the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 among minority communities.
