Unstructured wandering is a common theme in LA-based Aaron Garber-Maikovska’s videos and drawings. For his two-dimensional work, he lays Gator Board (a rigid substrate similar to foam core) onto the floor and allows himself to spontaneously draw within the confines of the mass-produced material. This free-flow of lines and motion mirrors the artist’s video works, where he travels to the suburban borders of California’s interior to perform unscripted dances, gestures, and songs. Both bodies of work contain a sincerity and a frenetic energy that captures his attraction to random, unfiltered expression. Garber-Maikovska trained with Paul McCarthy at University of California, and has exhibited in the US and Europe.
