The works of Tobias Pils display gestural brushstrokes and sketched structures in a back-and-forth relationship between figure and ground. In his Still Life series, representational shapes that suggest flowers and stems interact with a network of abstract marks. Pils applies varnish, oil, and acrylic to raw canvas, skillfully balancing bold lines while allowing controlled washes of gray to bleed into the composition. Pils lives and works in Vienna, has exhibited throughout Europe and the US, and was the Artist-in-Residence at the Chinati Foundation in 2016.
