Nathan Carter

FASCINATOR FOR THE WINSOME SWANS OF TURTLE CREEK

2017
aluminum and acrylic latex paint
56 1/2 x 46 1/2 x 1 inches

For many years, Nathan Cater has used a vocabulary of handmade, simplified shapes to create two-dimensional and three-dimensional works. His pieces often possess a childlike, naive color palette but maintain a carefully studied compositional structure. Here, Carter’s title asks us to consider the work as a “fascinator” – a large, decorative headpiece – as the curving lines and shapes swirl around a head-like central form. Typical of Carter’s work, the piece is simultaneously scrappy, elegant, and wild. Carter’s work has been included in numerous group and solo exhibitions at venues worldwide, including the Kemper Museum of Contemporary, Kansas City; ArtPace, San Antonio; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; and Art Gallery of Ontario.
