Harold Ancart is a Belgium-born, New York-based artist that explores ideas of drawing and space. His interest in drawing comes from the idea that a trace is where material form becomes physically perceptible, therefore the act of drawing is transitional, by activating space. In this work, Ancart strategically burns a photograph, yielding a naturally active mark. The colorful photograph is taken from the culture of tourism and leisure and counteracts the grim quality of the burnt scar. Ancart then frames the work with an elegant bronze frame, resulting in an object that contains elements of Minimalism, abstraction, and popular culture. Ancart’s work has been the subject of solo exhibitions in Brussels, Berlin, Pulheim, New York, and Miami. His work has been included in group shows at the Astrup Fearnley Museet, Oslo; 9th Taipei Biennial; Palais de Tokyo, Paris; and Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin.
