YELLOW RED BLUE
acrylic on canvas
24 x 30 inches
Through a precisely calibrated geometry, Houston-based artist Susie Rosmarin produces a wide range of optical effects in her work. Taking up the charge initiated by Modernist painters to activate the space of the two-dimensional picture plane through abstract vocabulary, she uses primarily grids of color to create undulating, vibrating surfaces. In Yellow Red Blue, the lighter colors appear to push out at the viewer, while the darker blues and purples seem to pinch back into space. As with much of her work, a wonderful conflict arises between what we know (the painting is flat) and what we see (the painting is three-dimensional). Rosmarin’s work can be found in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York; and the Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas, among others.
