PANORAMA (POLSKI FIAT) (22)
oil on canvas
17 3/4 x 25 5/8 inches
Polish artist Slawomir Elsner uses drawings, paintings, and photographs to meticulously duplicate aesthetic practices of other people to analyze their identity. In Elsner’s Panorama series, he uses paint to reproduce images from the low-budget Silesian illustrated weekly Panorama that was published in 1976 (the year of the artist’s birth). In Panorama (Polski Fiat)(22), Elsner carefully imitates the errors found in low quality printing techniques by rendering the black shadow of the Fiat with a faded effect. Elsner’s selected solo exhibitions include the Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin; Rüdiger Schöttle Galerie, Munich; Marc Jancou Contemporary, New York; Polish Institute, Berlin; and Museum Dhondt-Daenens, Deurle. Elsner lives and works in Berlin.
