In an attempt to recondition visual- and content-related confusion from the internet, Michele Abeles creates collages through a digital process where common subjects such as rocks, street numbers, ads, hairy arms, and wall textures become the protagonists. Abeles says that the negative space between these subjects functions like “aisles between the merchandise” of the stores we encounter on a regular basis, linking her work back to an everyday experience. Michele Abeles lives and works in New York. Her work has recently appeared in group exhibitions at Sculpture Center, New York; New Jersey MoCA, Asbury Park; and White Columns, New York, as well as in Greater New York at MoMA PS1. She received an MFA in photography from Yale University (2007) and was awarded a Rema Hort Mann Visual Arts grant (2010).
