mixed media oil on canvas

For many years, New York-based Isca Greenfield-Sanders has transformed old slides (salvaged on eBay or other secondhand sources) into atmospheric paintings that conjure bucolic scenes and distant memories. To make the work, Greenfield-Sanders scans the slides and then grids off a surface to methodically transpose, and transform, the image with multiple layers of watercolor, colored pencil, or oil paint. She often leaves the grid visible, evidence of the painting’s relationship with the original photograph and the lost moment it aims to capture. Greenfield-Sanders’ work may be found in the permanent collections of the Brooklyn Museum; Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco; Israel Museum, Jerusalem; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Guggenheim Museum; and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
