Caragh Thuring

THE ACTUAL SCENE
2013
gesso, silver leaf, acrylic, graphite, and egg tempera on linen
40 1/8 x 55 7/8 inches

In The Actual Scene, Belgian-born, London-based artist Caragh Thuring establishes a strange, unsettling theatrical space with the barest of abstract elements. An undulating grid at the base of the picture plane sets up an expectation of landscape that is subverted (and flattened) by the silver, gestural strokes at the top and the yellow tab at the right. This fragmented quality appears in a number of works by Thuring, and she seems to revel in the fact that the viewer must reconcile all these disparate visual elements into their understanding of a work with an ever-shifting sense of scale and dimension. Thuring’s work was included in Newspeak: British Art Now at the Saatchi Gallery in 2010, and her work is in the collections of Tate, London; Zabludowicz Collection, London; and Saatchi Collection, London.
