The way photographs function as containers, messengers, and even translators of human experience has been a continued interest for Spanish-born, New York-based Martí Cormand. In a recent body of work, the artist has created oil paintings on Polaroid photographs recovered from his childhood house in Spain. Through the process, images and memories are obscured, merged, and even lost through a creative act that is a poignant metaphor for an ever-changing recollection and the passage of time. Cormand’s work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions at venues in Europe and the US. His work is in public collections such as the Museo Reina Sofía, Madrid; Jimenez-Colon Collection, Ponce; Fundacio La Caixa, Barcelona; and MoMA, New York.
