Brian Calvin’s loose style of painting belies an interest in the casual, yet affecting, moments in his figures’ lives. Here, a young woman cleans her nose with a Neti pot, evidence of her belief in alternative health rituals. Like Philip Guston, Calvin’s awkward composition and thickly outlined shapes conjure a quietly poignant scene out of a banal morning activity. Calvin’s work has been included in solo and group exhibitions worldwide.
