Ethnographic symbols and forms play a crucial role in Nathan Mabry’s artistic vocabulary. Mabry often combines these images from the past with contemporary objects or utilizes new materials and processes to alter their inherent meanings. Two masks are layered in opposite directions in Apparition 3, creating a new hybrid face. And though the identities of the original masks are present through our strained ability to decipher them, what is clearer is the uniquely postmodern mix of cultural references and our interpretation of them in the present. Nathan Mabry lives and works in Los Angeles, and his work is in the permanent collections of numerous institutions.
