Shinpei Kusanagi

MY ATLAS

2014
arcrylic on canvas
57 1/4 x 44 1/8 inches

Tokyo-based painter Shinpei Kusanagi succeeds in painting landscapes with the barest of means. Understated and humble, his works feature carefully placed geometric shapes, washes of color, and bits of foliage to give the viewer a fleeting sensation of the manmade and natural elements that make up the scene. In My Atlas, the edge of a bridge, the line of a lamppost, and a few leaves are just enough to create a beautiful, meditative, and barely-there environment. Kusanagi has shown in galleries in the US and Japan, and he has been in exhibitions at Ueno Royal Museum, Tokyo, and Palace Pocia, Vienna, among others.
