Using the photograph as a starting point, New York-based artist Tamar Halpern creates chaotic, contradictory works that gyrate and dissolve between the recognizable and the abstract. In this untitled work, image fragments and photographic effects are manipulated, cropped, rearranged, and distorted to create an optically jarring and engaging work on a grand scale. The tape line down the center emphasizes both a physical and psychological disjuncture that is so palpable in the work. Halpern has had solo exhibitions at Office Baroque in Antwerp and The Sculpture Center in Long Island City, and in 2010 she was chosen by P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center to participate in its third iteration of Greater New York, which focuses on emerging artists living and working in the New York metropolitan area.
