Dan Rees

ARTEX PAINTING

2012
oil on canvas
60 x 48 inches

Dan Rees uses materials like Artex – the texturizing home decoration technique imbued with elements of nostalgia – to play with notions of taste and everyday culture. The artist applies this material to oil paintings, strategically re-contextualizing an old low-culture trend into a contemporary high-brow discourse. The resultant work, though executed with home-decoration methods, ultimately recalls the great painters like Willem de Kooning, Lee Krasner, and Arshile Gorky. Dan Rees’s work has recently been the subject of solo exhibitions at Baronian Francey, Brussels; New Galerie, Paris; Wallspace, New York; ZINGERpresents, Amsterdam; Galerie Andreas Huber, Vienna; MOT International, London; and Parade Gallery, London. Dan Rees lives and works in Berlin.
