Since 2005, LA-based photographer Zoe Crosher has dedicated herself to The Michelle duBois Project – an in-depth, multi-layered endeavor surrounding the photographic archive of Michelle duBois, a call girl who traveled extensively in the Pacific Rim during the 1970s and 1980s. duBois loved to dress up and take on real and imagined personas, such as1930s actress Mae West. In the Mae Wested series, Crosher has crumpled original images of duBois dressed as the actress and rephotographed them. The last step is to print them on metallic paper, translating the memory of duBois (and Mae West) into a glamorous, sculptural image. Crosher’s 2008 solo exhibition The Reconsidered Archive of Michelle du Bois was shown at the Claremont Museum of Art. She has work in the permanent collection of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and was recently awarded the prestigious Art Here and Now Award by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Most recently, her Mae Wested series was on view at the Dallas Contemporary.
