The reason I use commercial imagery is because I’m trying to go against the idea that all images are created or fully informed by ideology… The reason that something like brand logos are everywhere is because that’s how memory works – you have a sign with specific set of associations that you can memorize easily with this visual symbol. – Timur Si-Qin

Emulating the visual language of corporations, Berlin-based artist Timur Si-Qin brands his work with “PEACE” and Daoist taiji (known in the West as yin-yang), combining the two easily recognizable but unrelated concepts and repeating both until they lose any original meaning. Step and repeats are photograph backdrops displayed at events and red carpets to incorporate a company’s logo into photographs of the event, and for his step and repeat Si-Qin printed his brand on aluminum. The reflective qualities of the panel add to the work’s slick industrial appearance and would also make it a poor setting for the glare of a flash photograph. Si-Qin has exhibited his installations and sculptures across the world, including his large installation, A Reflected Landscape, at the 2016 Berlin Biennale.
