Ruairiadh O’Connell

CIRCUS CIRCUS
2014
silkscreen on wax in welded steel tray
23 x 19 x 1 inches

Ruairiadh O’Connell’s work investigates the psychological functions of design, often looking at abstract patterns, domestic interiors, and landscape architecture. In this work from O’Connell’s ‘railing sculptures’, he presents what might appear to be a section of a traditional metal fence. O’Connell casts a water-based resin called jesmonite on custom-welded steel, which is colored by contact with lace privacy curtains. By way of an elegant and unique sculptural vocabulary, the artist presents a work that questions how privacy, separation, and borders can subconsciously affect our moods. O’Connell lives and works in Frankfurt. His work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at Project Native Informant for MiArt, Milan; Pro Numb, London; Project Native Informant, London; Landings, Oslo; Halle Fur Kunst, Luneburg; and International Project Space, Birmingham.
