Maximilian Schubert

cast acrylic polyurethane, fiberglass, and vinyl
20 x 18 x 1 inches

Maximilian Schubert merges the conventions of painting and sculpture to create works that exist in an in-between category of art. At first, this untitled work appears to be a white monochrome with thick gestural marks scraped into the painted surface. In fact, the marks have been cast, evidenced by the deep lines cutting into the fabric surface, which now behaves more like plaster or clay than fabric. The work reinforces itself as a physical object, while also questioning the nature of what is real and fake in the realm of painting. Schubert’s work has been in gallery exhibitions in the US and abroad.
