Leo Villareal uses LED lights to create mesmerizing installations, pubic projects, and sculptures. And though his work relies on customized, artist-generated computer code and a number of advanced technologies, it is characterized by an elegant simplicity, an approach that pares down its elements to their essence and then explores the many possibilities of those elements in time and space. Bulbox 5 is a simple acrylic box with a radiating geometry that fades and pulses in an endless sequence of computer-generated speeds and color combinations. Villareal’s work is in the permanent collections of many museums, and he has created site-specific works around the world, most recently Volume at the Dallas Cowboy’s Headquarters in Frisco.
