DO EXACTLY THAT
2012
cellophane, paint, and sellotape
47 1/4 x 35 1/2 x 23 5/8

Scottish artist Karla Black says, “I prioritize material experiences over language as a way to learn about and understand the world.” Her works do not point outside of themselves, rather, everything about them is physically and visually present. In Do Exactly That, the viewer experiences the immediate physicality and materiality of the work. The delicacy, transparency, and reflection of the cellophane along with the circles painted directly on the surface bring a realness that is emotionally engaging. Black represented Scotland it the 54th Venice Biennale and her work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Kunsthalle Nürnberg; Modern Art Oxford; Kunstverein, Hamburg; Migros Museum, Zurich; and West London Projects. Karla Black’s work has been included in the recent exhibitions: All of this and nothing, Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Strange Solution, Tate Britain, London; and Poor Thing, Kunstalle Basel. Karla Black lives and works in Glasgow. Karla Black’s exhibition, Karla Black: Concentrations 55 at the Dallas Museum of Art opens this October and will be on view through March 2013.
