pencil and enamel on paper with shaped frame

Karl Haendel likens his process to that of a political commentator or editorialist, as he selects photographs from a variety of found sources for his large-scale, labor intensive graphite drawings. No subject is off limits, and his drawings often have the wry distance of someone who asks us to consider the strange, uncanny side of our everyday existence. Medicine (DY6) comes from a recent body of work that looked at notions of transformation and evolution. Here, a man and woman practice couple’s yoga in an effort to elevate their minds and bodies. Haendel heightens the absurdity of the activity with an off-kilter, trapezoidal frame. Haendel’s work is the collections of several public institutions, and he has participated in numerous museum exhibitions.
