Joe Andoe

BROADBAND
2014
oil on canvas
53 1/2 x 72 inches

Known for his monochrome, dreamlike paintings of horses and Americana, New York-based artist Joe Andoe pulls his subject matter from a childhood spent near Tulsa. In a recent series, Andoe returns to the landscapes he knew as a child through the disembodied lens of Google Satellite Street Maps. Broadband depicts a curving roadway and barren landscape interrupted by vertical telephone posts. Andoe masks the individual wires with wide brush strokes that intersect a vast cloud-covered sky. These passageways of information mimic the roadway they tower over, and connect the rural community of Andoe’s youth to the broader world in a more immediate way than the highways.
