Günther Förg

UNTITLED
2005
acrylic on canvas
76 3/4 x 126 inches

Throughout his career, German artist Günther Förg explored elements of modernity through his photography and paintings, borrowing from movements like De Stijl, Abstract Expressionism, and Constructivism. Untitled, from his Grid Paintings series, reinterprets the modernist grid and its varying roles in the history of art. The child-like quality of Förg’s brushstrokes belies the precise execution of paint that energetically fills the work. Fields of coral, gray, and gold cover the canvas, divided by the criss-crossed slashes of color. The Grid Paintings are intensely expressive, with ambient fields of paint laying behind the chaotic lines. First gaining international acclaim in the 1980s, Förg was part of the influential group of German painters that included Martin Kippenberger, Albert Oehlen, and Georg Herold, and his work can be found in collections worldwide.
