Macuga, Goshka

Goshka Macuga

THE MARVELLOUS RELEASE
2010
collage on fiber-based paper
22 3/8 x 29 1/4 inches

Polish-born Goshka Macuga often works in multiple modes, from collage to large-scale installation. In her collage work, Macuga combines historical photographs into fresh compositions that give them new meaning. In The Marvellous Release, Goshka absurdly releases a masculine man back into the wild. As her work is often critical of the history of art for regularly neglecting the accomplishments of women creative, perhaps this work is a humorous critique of men’s lack of intellect. Macuga currently lives and works in London. In 2008, she was amongst the four nominees for the Turner Prize. She has had solo projects at Tate Britain, London; Kunsthalle Basel; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; and Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. She was included in Documenta 2012 and was the recipient of the Arnold Bode Prize.
