In recent years, Mexican Artist Gonzalo Lebrija has created work centered on notions of time, in particular “the concentrated instant” – an event that synthesizes all the narrative moments before and after it. His works have taken the form of a car balanced on the tip of its front bumper (the instant before it crumples) or a lasso photographed as it forms a perfect circle around a rider and his horse. In Lamento dorado (Golden Lament), a male figure in a suit leans his forehead on his arm in a melancholic (and darkly humorous) pose. The work activates space as a sculpture and as an installation, as it transforms the wall and floor into a moment of surprise, pause, and reflection. Lebrija has recently participated in international exhibitions such as Deriva Especular, Museum of Modern Art, Mexico City; Resisiting the Future, Museo Amparo in Puebla and the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris; The Distance Between You and Me, Vancouver Art Gallery; Nunca más, nunca menos, Museo de la Memoria y Tolerancia, Mexico City; and Energy Effects, MCA, Denver.
