In a career spanning more than 60 years, Frank Bowling has continuously explored and invigorated the language of abstract painting. Born in Guyana in 1936, Bowling arrived in London in 1953 and attended the Royal College. In the 60s, he moved to New York where he enjoyed a successful career, and from the late 70s on he has split his time between London and New York. In Bowling’s recent work, his focus is on the ability of color and texture to conjure the sublime. Dense layers of rich hues and sections of canvas form these works, and Bowling has left jagged edges from pinking shears visible as a reference to his seamstress mother. At once deeply personal and utterly universal, Bowling’s work is a testament to abstract painting’s ability to tap into the most powerful human emotions. Earlier this year, Bowling’s work was on view at the DMA in the exhibition Frank Bowling: Map Paintings.
