Collaged photographs from Erin Shirreff’s Pages series touch on notions of visual perception, recognizability, and coherence. To create these works, she joins partial images of early and mid-twentieth-century sculptures. The connection point of the seam (here perfectly matched) generates a new, yet impossible, object. The geometry of these images is instantly familiar as the visual vocabulary of Modernism, yet through Shirreff’s simple manipulation mysterious and otherworldly forms are born. Erin Shirreff lives and works in New York City. Shirreff’s exhibition Available Light is currently on view at the Agnes Etherington Art Centre, Kingston, Canada, and will travel to the Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver, in 2013. She was included in recent exhibitions at Stephen Friedman, London; Hauser & Wirth, New York; Nouveau Musée National de Monaco; White Cube, London; Aspen Art Museum; The Power Plant, Toronto; Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia; MoMA P.S.1, New York; Sculpture Center, New York; and Ballroom Marfa, Texas. Her work is in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Nouveau Musée National de Monaco; and the Guggenheim Museum, New York. Shirreff was an artist-in-residence at the Chinati Foundation in 2011, and the recipient of a 2011 Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Grant.
