bitumen emulsion, vinyl, and wood
16 3/4 x 14 5/8 x 3 3/4 inches

In his recent series of 5150 paintings, Daniel Turner encases bitumen emulsion between two sheets of vinyl that have been folded around a wooden structure. Bitumen is a black, viscous mix of hydrocarbons used in roofing and road surfacing as a component of tar and asphalt, and at its base level comes from decomposed organic matter. In Turner’s work, the vinyl prevents the material from completely hardening, resulting in formally beautiful work that poses questions about time while challenging the tradition of painting. Daniel Turner was born in Portsmouth, Virginia in 1983 and currently lives and works in Brooklyn. Recent exhibitions include Expanded Painting, Prague Biennale 5; Modern Talking, Muzeul National de Arta din Cluj-Napoca, Romania; and A Rebours, Adam Lindemann Foundation, New York. Turner has been selected for the Chinati Foundation’s 2013-2014 residency program in Marfa, Texas.
