Charles Long

GRR
2014
pastel on photograph
37 7/8 x 26 7/8 inches (framed)

Though Charles Long’s sculptural works incorporate references to art history, popular culture, and nature, they all exist as an imaginary hybrid that merge our inner and outer realities. His recent pastel drawings on photographs use digital enlargements of snapshots from outside his California studio as their background. Indistinct images found in his journals and sketchbooks hover in the sky area of the image. In Grr, two interlocking objects float in space, appearing as primordial objects forming in a void, suggesting the artist’s inner world forming in the open expanse of the landscape. Long’s work was featured twice in the Whitney Biennial, and is included in public collections worldwide.
